After 6 weeks of building and replacing scaffolding and with a nice white ‘overcoat’ to protect it (and the stonemasons !) from the weather, actual restoration work has now begun!
This involves the laborious process of ‘raking out’ the old concrete, replacing rusted iron work with stainless steel, repairing old cracked stones (with a stone from a quarry in Devon, England) and filling in with lime mortar. All this will be done level by level until the masons complete the structure.
